The difference between a "Shih Tzu"    a "Imperial Shih Tzu " and a "Chinese Imperial Dog" ?

Shih Tzu
9 - 16 pounds
Recognized by AKC in 1969.
This weight range in the breed standard is accepted by the American Shih Tzu Club.
Shih Tzu size parents can
throw an Imperial size,
the imperial size dogs
can throw the standard size.

Slang Terms " Lap Crusher" by Imp breeders
Slang terms by ASTC to describe the Imperials are " Runt" and " Dwarf ".

You can read more details here about all 3 sizes and their history
Imperial Shih Tzu
under 9 lbs
a smaller version of the Shih Tzu
and is considered by AKC as a Shih Tzu.
The term "Imperial" is a description
of a weight variance of the Shih Tzu
by dog breeders.
Why because the Imperial size is a throw
back of the original dogs in Tibet.
The Empress preferred 7-11 pound dogs
Imperial breeders also prefer the smaller size and even smaller
and pushed to become their own
breed, separate from the Shih Tzu.

Slang Terms are " Imperial", " Tea Cup Shih Tzu ", " Tiny Shih Tzu ", " Toy Shih Tzu."
Chinese Imperial Dog
Breed standard is under 9 lbs no taller than 9 in.

Is very different than a Shih Tzu and a Imperial Shih Tzu
Chinese Imperial Dog is registerd as a Chinese Imperial Dog !
Not as a Shih Tzu like the Imperial is

A first generation Chinese Imperial dog has been certified by weight and measurements stated by the parent club of the CID
To be a second generation CID both parents of the dog has to be a registerd Chinese Imperial by the Chinese Imperial Dog Registry of America, Than when the Pup reaches 14 months must also be certified by weight and length to be register by the Chinese Imperial Dog Registry of America.
A 3rd generation Cid must also be verified at 14 mnts
The Cid is becoming accepted by the RARE breed registry soon.
In years to come when the CID breeders have 300 to 400 3rd generation Cids will they become a new breed reconized by the American Keenel Club foundation Stock Service. Than AKC will make the Chinese Imperial Dog is own breed and can be in AKC dog shows and we will compete with the Shih Tzu.

A Shih Tzu according to AKC The American Kennel club and dictated by the National Shih Tzu organization the weight requirements of the Shih Tzu is 9-16 pounds. "Imperial Shih Tzu " breeders prefer ours under 9 pounds full grown.
We feel we have every right to show off our best puppies and Adult Shih Tzu in the ring just as any magnificent breed of dog.
In our diligent efforts to become a breed variation of the Shih Tzu, and by not adding another bred of dog to our Imperials we found we can and do show and be accepted as Chinese Imperial Dog by many dog registries such as  apiregistry.com  and soon AKC. Our healthy Imperial Shih Tzu deserve this right.
Our purebred Imperial Shih tzu are registered with the AKC - American Kennel Club as a Shih Tzu
We breeders of Imperial Shih tzu and Chinese Imperial Dog, specialize in breeding the smaller sized dog which are often called the Chinese Imperials, Imperial Shih Tzu and incorrectly termed as a Toy Shih Tzu, Miniature Shih Tzu, Teacup Shih Tzu, or Pocket Puppies.
Our sizes ranging from 3-9 lbs but many of our puppies mature in the 4-7 lb ranges. We rarely have standard size Shih Tzu. We breed for healthy, quality, temperament and wonderful personalities.

What does "Imperial" Shih Tzu mean according to Websters Dictionary ?
Of Superior or Unusual Size or Excellence

    Here at

Imperial ShihTzu and the Chinese Imperial Dog

breed our Chinese Imperial Dog and Imperial Shih Tzu for quality, health and temperament. We prefer our AKC Shih Tzu and our Chinese Imperial Dog to have short level backs, no eye white, straight legs, baby doll faces and tiny noses on gorgeous heads and sweet expression.
Size or color of our puppies are not our highest priorities, but when I get a beautiful Shih Tzu or one that has vibrant color, I am very pleased.

    Our

    Chinese Imperial Dog

are registered and shown with NCA National Canine Association our

    Shih Tzu

    are

    AKC American Kennel Club

    registered.

As a Chinese Imperial and a ShihTzu breeder I prefer the origional smaller version of the breed that standard Shih Tzu was created from and to strive to mantain the same quality as the ShihTzu except we prefer ours origional parent of the Shih Tzu to be shown much smaller, shorter backed and less nose. We fondly call them " Imps " or Chinese Imperial Dog. Chinese Imperial and many Shih Tzu breeders feel the origional smaller version is the highly prized dog Many people refer to them as Tea Cup but that is not a correct term for a Shih Tzu. This term teacup is a poodle or yorkie term.
Our Imperials and Shih Tzu are our family and we want homes where they will have loving parents that will feel the same about them. If you feel that you have that type of home for one of our puppies and desire to be considered for adoption, drop me an email or give me a call. Let's get to know one another. Later, if we both are still interested, then maybe you can drop by for a visit so that we can meet and you can meet my Chinese Imperial Dog and our Shih Tzu dogs.

    A very good Article

Imperial Shih Tzu: a Great Family Pet
    by Rebecca Simpson

In the mystery of legends of China and Tibet, the origin of Shih Tzu is entwined. In the study of anthropology, various theories have been proposed to determine the exact origin of Shih Tzu. When one theory expounds that contemporary Shih Tzu originated during Manchu dynasty, the other puts much emphasis on the origination of Shih Tzu in the Imperial Court of China through the silk trade routes.
As hypothesized by different scholars, Tibetan sleeve dogs are the ancestors of Imperial Shih Tzu. American Kennel Club (AKC) propounds the standard breed of Shih Tzu, while most common breeders use the terms ‘Imperial size’ or ‘Teacup size’.
In the Imperial Palace of China, Shih Tzu was bred. Following the instructions received from the Chinese Empresses Dowager, the preference was only given to the smaller dogs, while the bigger ones were simply either discarded or sold in the dissident marketplace. The smaller ones were regarded as the highest honor provided to the diplomats from the Empresses. Hence, these smaller puppies were raised with maximum care.
The tiny Imperial Shih Tzu is raised for quality, health and temperament. As defined by AKC, Imperial Shih Tzu features a short back, straight legs and baby doll face with tiny button nose on elegant head along with a cute and affectionate expression. The puppies may be available in different colors like chocolate, red, mahogany, liver, blue and other colors. Typically, the puppies may come in gorgeous coats, round eyes, soft little bodies and elegant heads. At the time of breeding, special care needs to be taken while selecting mating partners in order to properly breed the best personality, health and temperament in the offspring.
Typically the temperament of an Imperial Shih Tzu is nice and sweet. They are basically cheerful, spunky and steady dogs. Royal affability, bold behavior and frequent arrogance set them apart from other type of breeds of the same family. Their behavior is very friendly with almost zero trouble. The Imperial Shih Tzu responds very nicely during patient training. Because of their alert nature, although they prefer to bark outside, they stay calm and quiet inside of the house.
There is a huge market for the Imperial Shih Tzu. But many individuals and families have a preference for the Imperial Shih Tzu because of its small size. These types of dogs are easy to carry. Many tiny Imperial Shih Tzu owners take their dogs almost everywhere. Owners tend to treat these elite little dogs like treasures or extraordinary beautiful jewels. They are so small that they may require hand feeding and they need daily additional nutritional supplements also.
Quite naturally you cannot purchase a Shih Tzu for the price of most other breeds. The price is settled depending on various factors like breeding pair, gender, color, markings and size. If you are ready to pay $2500, you might be able to buy a beautiful teacup Imperial Shih Tzu that tip the scales at a whopping full grown size of six pounds or less.
Typically, you can start bargaining for an Imperial Shih Tzu at a base price of $1000. The size of the standard Imperial Shih Tzu is typically between six to nine pounds. For a standard Shih Tzu, you may only need to spend $500 for a dog that weighs in at nine pounds full grown.
